Daughters of Darkness- The best 70’s art-house vampire movie you haven’t seen, this chamber-play of sorts is high on atmosphere, sensual imagery, and metaphor. The cast is perfect, and Delphine Seyrig in the lead role is unforgettable. It may be a bit slow for today’s audiences, but the ending is well worth the wait. And it also might be one of the most important 70’s feminist works in cinema.
Don’t Look Now – Another macabre, art-house film based on a novel, not only is this movie truly unsettling, but it features maybe the steamiest ‘love’ scene in cinema. And if you didn’t know, Donald Sutherland was once a strapping leading man, and Julie Christie was drop-dead gorgeous. And they could act then too. It is another slow-paced film with gothic trappings, but the ending delivers bigtime. I recommend this trailer only if you don’t plan on seeing this any time soon.
The Entity – The scariest part of this DVD is the 30 minute documentary of the actual para-psychologist involved in this real case with his incredible retelling of what actually happened and how it differed from the movie. He shows incredible photos of some of the “phenomena” that happened in her presence and relates some chilling testimony. Barbara Hershey gives a powerhouse performance as a woman brutally violated by . . . something. The “true story” aspect rubs off on the whole production, and Stan Winston is on board for some great effects. But watch the documentary afterwards and be prepared to be in wonder and horror over these events that happen in our world, not some movie. Scoop the trailer.
The Changeling – I triple-dog-dare you to watch this one all alone in the dead of night in a large old house. The house this movie is filmed in is straight from a collective nightmare. The actors performances still hold true, especially the legendary George C Scott. If you liked this, don’t miss The Orphanage, which owes alot to this movie. Here’s a great trailer that somewhat conveys the creepiness of the proceedings.
Death Dream – The best war-horror movie ever perhaps, and it is still relevant and makes a great metaphor for the war today. This is made by Bob Clark, the director of Black Christmas, a classic slasher-film that is probably too well-known to make this list. While it is has many dated aspects to it, it provokes enough chills and unintentional laughter to make it worthwhile. The ending is so unique and brilliant that I’m shocked no one has ever done it before, or stole it after.
Anyone seen these–or others that should make this list?
Ready to bounce to some fidget-rave-house madness?!? I’m stocking up on my Red Bull now. God bless Scion for bringing some of the scene thru Austin. I’ll actually consider buying one for at least 15 seconds.
Just got to RSVP here: https://secure.scion.com/scion/ssl/rsvp/housePartyAustin.do
What’s the point of this movie?
OK, we’ll get to that, but how about this: What do you do when you have a shotgun and lots of ammo against some attackers? YOU WIN! You put your ass against a wall facing the door and you keep your advantage until daybreak. I can’t respect a serious survival movie with poor decision by victims.
The set-up to the movie was perfect and unique, and would have made for a good melodrama. Liv Tyler gives a fantastic performance and is as beautiful as ever. Most of the movie is executed well with a few chilling moments, but back to my questions: What’s the point? Where is this movie going? How could you disturb Liv’s radiance? And why?
I know, evil is random and faceless, I get it. That’s a good concept, but this movie didn’t quite get there.

Brand new, Halloween-themed dance music. Get your Thriller on to this:
Ok, so check out the artwork for Empire of the Sun’s debut album, and imagine what it might sound like. You got pretty close if you had the eighties in mind. It brings to mind eighties artists Wham, Men at Work, and Japan. It’s also like a Australian Mgmt, but more electro-pop. The album is certainly worth grabbing, so checkout the lead single and follow-up single remix to see if it’s your style. . .

Check out this scary trailer of Phenomena which I consider the best of this horror maestro’s work. If you haven’t seen Phenomena or Tenebre than I definitely recommend checking them out this Halloween. Pelts is a brilliant and gory one-hour Master of Horror entry on Showtime starring Meatloaf. Many view Suspiria, a tale of witches, as a classic and one of his best. Opera is a pretty good straight-forward 80’s slasher or giallo. His latest offering Mother of Tears, just released on DVD and starring his daughter Asia Argento, was a letdown in my opinion. I also part with many Argento fans by disliking Deep Red and Inferno. But I’d love to hear anyone else’s opinion on their favorite Argento movies, just comment below-.
1. Phenomena
2. Tenebre
3. Pelts
4. Suspiria
5. Opera
An entertaining spectacle with unintentional laughs galore and line readings with a real-LY bad case of in-flec-TION. Is it toxins? The wind? Or perhaps someone passing gas? If you watch it like it’s the DEADLY FART movie then I swear you’ll have a great time.
As my mother would say about Shyamalan, God lo-ove him. Rating: 6/10
Monster lovers of all ages who rent this based on the title or cover art won’t be disappointed. This is a fun-filled romp through monster-land with enough cool non-CGI FX to garner a Best Use of Latex award at Fantastic Fest. Director Jon Knautz has an eye for good comedic acting and timing, and this succeeds as a comedy alone. Where the director needs improvement are some of the finale action sequences, where some fights come across clumsy and uninspired (See Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi for help!). This premise begs for a sequel that could take this kick-a** slaying and run to the hills with it.

Ohh! Crapp.. not only has the weirdest blog name ever, but is the AICN of dance music, with ‘mixtapes’ that offer 60+ downloads of remixes in one post that you can mix-up anyway you like. #14 has hit and has plenty to offer, but more to put in the recycle bin. I’m giving you the ten you need for the weekend, so you don’t have to sift through all of them yourself. I’ll link MJ, but get the rest here:
